The Oakland Zoo said five tigers were transferred after a private owner contacted the zoo seeking help finding permanent placements. The effort was coordinated with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the Performing Animal Welfare Society in California and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas. Four tigers are finally receiving adequate veterinary care, adequate nutrition and enrichment at accredited facilities.
One tiger, named Sitara, has become a permanent resident at the zoo.
