Warren was awarded the medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for putting himself in danger to try to save someone else's life. According to the commission, Warren received an emergency alert from his grandfather and quickly returned home to find smoke coming from the house. He called 911 and then went back inside to rescue Hickey, who had fallen from his walker and could not get out. With flames spreading through the house, Warren pulled his grandfather to safety and moved him outside.
